Reece and Quinn are at the Seekers for a couple of days while I’m on a business trip and Jenny juggles her many classes.
I called Donna today to check in. She said she was amazed by Reece. At one point today she couldn’t find him. Then she heard some noise on the basement stairs. It was Reece dragging up a scooter he felt needed to be upstairs. He did this with other toys he “needed” throughout the day.
It is so fun watching him become independent. He knows what he wants and we can smile as we watch him get it.
Everyone will tell you kids are entertaining and ours are no exception. We always enjoy the things Quinn tells us. Lately he lets us know when something is “sfoofy.” He is trying to say “spooky,” and many things are falling into that category.
The biggest one is foxes.
He was terrified when he was told a fox could live in the woods behind his grandparent’s house. He wanted to know if there was one in our house. Even though there isn’t one he asks from time to time. I wanted to show him nice foxes, so I looked on YouTube. Of course one of the first videos I found was a fox killing something. Quinn didn’t watch that one. I found this video which also of a fox killing something (he didn’t see it either), but it’s pretty.
We eventually looked at some nice pictures. The pictures may have eased his fears, but they didn’t answer our question as to why he was scared of foxes. We figured it out today.
One of Quinn’s favorite shows is Dora the Explorer. Dora is always yelling at one character. His name is Swiper, and he’s a fox.
He does look sfoofy, and likes to steal stuff. He doesn’t live in our house, near his grandparents and won’t attempt to harm him. We have one Halloween costume we won’t be getting.
Jenny and I returned to distance running this weekend when we took part in an indoor half-marathon. It was held at the Pettit National Ice Center which is the home of many Olympic Speedskaters, but sadly not Stephen Colbert. Steven Seeker and Steven Verhaalen were there, so we got our share of Stevens.
We had fun running our 47.7 laps around the speedskating oval, two rinks with figure skaters, family, friends and a Zamboni.
We spent the night before our race at the Seekers. Quinn requested a bird bath, so he got one. The sink seems to be shrinking.
He liked his bath, but his dirty brother did not.
Reece isn’t a big fan of baths lately. The worst part is the rinse.
I don’t think he likes being clean either because it doesn’t take long until he’s a mess.
One thing Reece likes is party favors. He found one and finally figured out how it works. It entertained him for awhile.
As the boys and I drove home tonight Quinn asked to go to the library. When I said it was closed he asked, “Why?”
He asks why about 1,000,000 times a day. He is the son of two journalists, so this is expected.
When I told the library was closed for the same reason his school closed, Martin Luther King, Jr. day, he knew what I was talking about. I credit this to preschool, which is one of the best things we’ve been able to do for him.
He called him “Mahteen Junya,” and he knew Dr. King was hurt. We talked about how some people didn’t like people who were different colors. We discussed how MLK spoke out and told people everyone is equal. Quinn wanted to know if MLK went to the doctor and got two band aids. To keep things simple I said yes.
We’ve been busy people lately. The amount of miles we drive, gas we consume and hours we’re in the car is really adding up. I can’t imagine what it will be like when the kids are in school and there are even more kids.
For now we’re trying to keep Quinn and Reece moving in the right direction.
Quinn loves school, and is doing great with his potty training.
Reece is fighting a cold and his brother. He is learning lots of new words and actions and we love watching him figure things out.
Both boys spend a lot of time together. They often end up screaming for one reason or another. Quinn enjoys his big brother role and the beatings that come with it. We stop these right away when we see them, but Reece takes his share of shots. Thankfully (and humorously) Reece is learning to fight back. Quinn usually screams like he was shot as Reece hits him. These hits are light and Quinn always admits they don’t hurt. It will only get worse as time progresses. When Reece starts inflicting pain I think Quinn will think twice when he hits his brother. I really hope this is soon.
This weekend the boys will get to watch their parents run around them as Jenny and I take part in an indoor half-marathon. Gretchen is running too, so the boys get to play with their cousins and grandparents while they watch us run in circles for two hours. We’re all looking forward to it.
This afternoon he headed off to his first day of preschool. This morning when he saw his school bag (one we’ve taken on trips before) Quinn asked if we were going on a plane.
When we got there Quinn was pulling his bag. A classmate walked past with his bag on his back. Quinn quickly requested his bag be on his back.
It was cute seeing things with Quinn’s name on them.
We watched him play for a bit and when Quinn took his spot next to his friend Aidan we left him on his own.
Quinn brought his work home to show us. We are so proud and I am feeling old.
2010 is here and it’s arrival was marked with an unexpected visitor. Reece Piece.
We arrived home from a nice dinner and couldn’t find the babysitter. After some searching we found her in the boy’s room dealing with our energetic little friend.
Like his brother, Reece is very good at toasting, so he toasted in 2010 with us. Thankfully, he was back to bed not too long after.
We went to the Seekers for the traditional kraut on New Year’s Day. We also got to see Jenny’s Grandma Williams. She was busy with half her great-grandsons. One of whom she enjoyed chasing.
It was nice visiting with her. I’m impressed because the boys saw two of their three great-grandmothers in a week! That makes for a prosperous new year in my book.

Quinn is a little boy. He constantly talks and asks hundreds of questions a day. He is using the potty, and is almost ready for preschool.
Reece’s Stats (12/17/09)

Reece is learning new words everyday. He talks in short sentences, still hasn't had a haircut, dishes out wonderful smiles and loves his momma.
